Student Identity for Grading

Why LearnCoding asks for an ID

Your LearnCoding account is identified by your email address. Your university's gradebook usually is not. It identifies you by a student number. To put your LearnCoding results into your official course grade, your instructor needs to know which row in their gradebook is you.

Depending on how your institution and your instructor work, that match is made in one of three ways. Your profile only asks you for the ones your current courses actually use, so you may be asked for nothing at all.

Where to find it

Open your profile from the user menu, then choose the Student identity tab. Everything below lives there, under the heading Student identity for grading.

The three ways you can be matched

1. By your email address. Nothing for you to do. Your instructor uploads a roster that already contains your email, and the match happens on its own. If your identity tab says there is nothing to add, this is usually why.

2. Canvas connection. For courses graded through Canvas. You enter the student number your institution uses in Canvas, once, and your account is linked to your institution's Canvas. Your name on LearnCoding must match your name on Canvas, because both are used for the match. See Canvas Integration for the details.

3. Your student ID at an institution. For courses that are not run through Canvas. You type in the student ID that institution issued you, and your instructor's own gradebook file is matched against it.

Why do I see two cards that look the same?

Because they are two different systems that happen to both ask for a number.

Canvas connection Your student ID at each institution
Used by Courses graded through Canvas Courses graded from the instructor's own gradebook file
Scope Your institution's Canvas, once for your account Separate, one per institution you study with
Also matches on Your name, which must match Canvas Nothing else, just the ID
Set by You, once You, per institution

Filling in one does not fill in the other. If you have already connected Canvas and a course still asks for a student ID, that is expected and not a bug: that course is not run through Canvas, so your Canvas link does not reach it. For security we only ever keep a scrambled version of your Canvas number (see below), so we could not copy it across for you even though it is often the same number.

You will only ever see a card that at least one of your current courses actually needs. Seeing just one card, or neither, is normal.

Why is my university named there?

The Your student ID at each institution card lists the institutions you are currently studying with on LearnCoding: your own institution, plus the institution behind any course you are enrolled in. The names come from the institutions set up on this LearnCoding site, not from a fixed list, so you will see your own.

If you study with more than one, you will see more than one. They are listed as separate entries, each with its own field, because your student ID at one institution has nothing to do with your ID at another. Fill in the ones you have; leave the rest blank.

What we store, and what these IDs cannot do

Your student ID is put through a one-way scramble (a hash) before it is saved. That is enough to check whether two IDs are the same, which is all matching needs, but the original number cannot be recovered from it, not by staff and not by us. That is also why the field is always blank when you come back to it, and why you can only replace or remove an ID rather than read it back.

These IDs are self-reported and nobody verifies them. So a student ID here:

  • does not enroll you in anything,
  • does not give you access to a course,
  • does not prove who you are,
  • and is only used to line your work up with a gradebook.

Getting one wrong means your grades may not reach your instructor's gradebook. It does not put your account or anyone else's at risk.

Troubleshooting

"This ID is already registered to another account at this institution." Someone else's account already claims that ID here. Nearly always this is a typo, so check the number first. If it really is yours, use the Report this button, which asks an administrator at that institution to look into it. Reporting is deliberate and never automatic, so an ordinary typo does not raise a case against anyone.

I entered the wrong ID. Enter the correct one and choose Replace ID. You do not need to remove the old one first.

I no longer want it stored. Choose Remove. Your grades for that institution may then stop matching, so only do this if you are leaving or were asked to.

My identity tab says there is nothing to add. Your courses match you another way, usually by your account email. There is nothing you need to do.

Something still is not matching. Contact your instructor. They can see their side of the gradebook and you cannot.
